International Volunteer Day (IVD) is celebrated annually on December 5th. This holiday was created by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985 to celebrate and give thanks to all those who volunteer around the world and make it a better place. In addition, there is a misconception that when volunteering, you must go big (i.e., help build a school) or go home. However, that is not the case! This blog article will list out some ways for you to get involved and do your part in making your community a better place.
Local Food Bank
With the holiday season right around the corner, what better way to do some volunteering than to work with some food. Checking in with your local food bank to see if they need any extra hands is a great place to begin. In this line of work, you’d most likely be tasked with collecting and sorting through food donations or distributing them to soup kitchens, shelters, etc. The best part about this opportunity is that you can work as much or as little as you’d like depending on your availability/schedule!
Homeless shelter
Volunteering at your local homeless shelter is also a great way to get involved and help the organization run smoothly, as well as meet people from different walks of life. You may engage in a variety of tasks ranging from preparing rooms and meals, cleaning, conversing with the residents, and much more. To find a homeless shelter near you, a quick search online will direct you to the nearest one. The time and effort you put into these shelters play a huge role in the maintenance of the facility/program, so know that your work is appreciated.
Climate Change Organization
Climate change has been a hot topic of discussion in the past few years and because of the increasing attention, there have been many organizations created aimed at promoting environmental wellbeing. If you are someone who believes that this is something important, joining a local climate change organization would be a great way to make a difference. Often, cities host events aimed at cleaning up local neighborhoods. If you are unable to find resources, you can always take the initiative and start something yourself!
Assist at Local Schools
If you have children, I am sure they have come home once or twice before informing you that their school was looking for volunteers to help with upcoming talent shows, parent-teacher conferences, sport competitions, and much more. This can be a great way to interact with the younger generation and give back to your community as well. Even if you do not have children, reaching out to the nearest school and asking for ways to get involved would be an excellent start.
Donate books/clothes
Lastly, we understand that life can get a bit hectic at times, so if you are unable to find time in your schedule to physically volunteer, no need to fret. Donating books and clothes (or any other items) can be a great way to give back without having it feel like a burden. If you do your annual spring deep cleaning, then this can be a perfect time to donate unwanted, but sturdy, items instead of tossing them out.
We hope that reading this blog revealed to you that volunteering can be done by anyone and everyone! This is by no means an exhaustive list, rather it is meant to inspire you to get creative about the ways in which you give back. And above all, no matter how you choose to get involved, remember that your efforts are valued and celebrated. Happy International Volunteer Day!
