HUECU is proud to have donated to the Harvard College Marathon Challenge team (HCMC) as they run the 2018 Boston Marathon to raise funds for the Phillips Brooks House Association (PBHA) Summer Urban Program (SUP).
SUP is a network of 10 summer camps at 11 different sites across Boston and Cambridge for seven weeks each summer. 130 college students and 90 local high school students staff the camps each summer, welcoming more than 800 kids. SUP offers mornings of academic enrichment, afternoons of educational field trips, and artistic, cultural, and service-learning workshops throughout the week, along with two overnight camping trips and a day-long final trip.
Since its beginnings, HCMC runners have raised over $660,000 for causes such as SUP. In the 2018 edition of the Boston Marathon, HCMC will be represented by 5 fiercely compassionate runners; Berkeley, Suriya, Brittany, Emma, and Sara; all of whom have committed to raising at least $3,000 for PHBA’s SUP. Senior from Lowell House, Berkeley Brown (’18) is studying social studies, while training for the marathon and raising funds for SUP. For Suriya Kandaswamy (‘20), a sophomore from Leverett House, Boston will be her first 26.2 mile run. Experienced in shorter distance races, senior Brittany Petros (’18) has run all around the world, but never 26.2 at a World Marathon Major like Boston. Hailing from Currier House, Emma Seevak (’20) is a longtime runner and recently wrote a research paper on the rich history of student-run PBHA. Completing the team is sophomore from Winthrop House, Sara Wetzler, who will also be running her first marathon.
